Chapter 32 : The House of Endless Illnesses

Written by : Master Sheng-yen Lu
Translated by : Janny Chow

I have found many problems with houses in the United States. Perhaps in building homes in forests and woods, Americans are responding to a natural instinct to live among nature. Even if they do not live in the woods, many live in homes surrounded by big trees. Often these trees are located directly outside the front door, behind the home, encircling and enshrouding the house.

When I first arrived in the United States, many of my American students invited me to inspect their homes when they learned that I performed feng-shui readings. As a result, I have studied quite a number of American homes. Though average Americans may appear tall and strong, they are no healthier than other races.

Moore, an American student of mine, said to me, "For the past three years, every member of my family has taken turns getting sick. As soon as one gets better, another becomes ill. There has been no break at all. We've spent vast sums of money on medical bills, yet the physical and mental suffering has been even worse."

He called his house "the house of endless illnesses."

The first thing I noticed upon visiting his home was a large tree with branches towering over the house. The house was not big, and the tree was huge in camparison. Luxuriant, well spaced leaves completly covered the house. The truck of the tree was huge, and roots extended beneath the home.

In such houses, residents have their yang-chi sucked away by the yin-chi of the large tree. With an excess of yin-chi overpowering the yang-chi, how can one avoid becoming cick?

I told Moore to move away as living in a house under such a large tree would definitely be detrimental to his family's health. The proper mix of yin and yang energies in a residential home is very important. As it would be too difficult to relocate the large tree, the best thing for him would be to move. After some convincing, Moore finally agreed.

Geomancers have pointed out various harmful situations that may lead to the breakout of numerous diseases and ailments. Occupants living in the following houses are vulnerable:
1. A house with watercourses directed at it from the four directions of tzu, wu, yu and mao (i.e., north, south, west, and east respectively.)

2. A house with roads pointed at it from the four directions of tzu, wu, yu and mao.

3. A house covered up by a huge tree with roots extending beneath the house.

4. Water from the ken (northeast) direction pointing at the front door.

5. Large rocks or artificial boulders piled at the front door as landscaped design.

6. A house that is either too bright or too dim.

7. A bathroom (toilet) connected with the kitchen, a manure pile next to a well, or a bathroom facing the front door.

8. The improper placement of heavy objects.

9. Too narrow of a distance between the front door and backyard, and a steep, imposing hill behind the house.

I once performed a feng-shui reading for an individual named Fable. As soon as I walked through his front door, I could touch the wall to the backyard. The house was long from right to left and its backyard was rocky and steep. I said to him, "You have some health problems."

"No," he replied. "I have always been pretty healthy."

It was true that Fable was tall and muscular with rosy cheeks. The people around us were surprised to hear me make that statement.

I said, "This is a minor illness, but the pain caused is unbearable."

"To what illness are you referring?"

"Hemorrhoids."

Fable's face turned a deep red and he said, "Grand Master, you are right. I indeed have had hemorrhoids for many years and the pain is quite unbearable at times. But how did you know?"

"When the distance between the front door and the back of the house is narrow, and the land behind the house is too steep and piled with hard rocks, one will have hemorrhoids."

"What about apartment houses with no hills or rocky slopes? How are readings done then?"

"An apartment house may not have hills or rocky slopes, but 'pressing and narrow' features can still exist. According to feng-shui theories, pressing conditions have the same impact as steep conditions, and narrow features are similar to 'hard' features," I explained.

The Secrets of Earth Magic states:
In the presence of --
-The Luo-ho and Ji-do Stars, the chest suffers;
-Swallow's nest on a beam, recalcitrant skin sores grow;
-A manure pit facing the front door, the belly is bloated;
-A hollow on the oncoming dragon, insanity develops;
-Chaotic rocks near the mouth of a well, limbs are broken;
-Worn out doors and pillars, multiple sores grow.
